DJI Osmo Action 4
The DJI Osmo Action 4 is currently our best pick among these three cameras for IRL streaming. What decides it is its stability, proven in practical use, the very good image stabilization, and the reliable RTMP workflow with Moblin.
Moblin can control the Action 4 over Bluetooth, start the camera's RTMP livestream, and take the camera signal as a video source through the local RTMP server. Livestreaming through DJI Mimo is also possible. That keeps the setup flexible, and you're not tied to DJI Mimo alone.
1. Action cam picks at a glance
Our current selection first. How they compare, where they differ, and practical tips follow further down.
2. The three models at a glance
| Model | Assessment | Combo recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| DJI Osmo Action 4 | Clear IRL4YOU pick: proven stability and a well-tested Moblin/RTMP workflow. | Adventure Combo |
| DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro | Newer model generation, if you deliberately need its extra features. | Adventure Combo for a new purchase |
| DJI Osmo Action 6 | Current generation. Test its Moblin/RTMP workflow especially carefully before a long outing. | Adventure Combo for a new purchase |
The newest model isn't automatically the best IRL camera. For a long mobile stream, a stable overall setup and a proven workflow matter more than how new the model is.
3. Standard or Adventure Combo?
With all three models you ask yourself the same thing: Standard or Adventure Combo? The table shows when each fits.
| Variant | Makes sense if … | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Combo | you already have suitable batteries and mounts | Otherwise you'll be missing spare batteries and mounts later |
| Adventure Combo | you're new to this and stream on the move for long stretches | With the extra batteries you have reserve and can swap quickly on the go |
Before you buy, check the product page for what exactly is in the box and whether batteries and accessories fit together.
4. DJI Osmo Action 4: our best pick right now
The Action 4 is our preferred camera for this use. The proven Moblin workflow, the camera control, and the stable RTMP behavior weigh more heavily for IRL streaming than having the newest model possible.
- Standard Combo: fits if you already have compatible batteries and mounts.
- Adventure Combo: our recommendation for a complete fresh start with extra runtime reserve.
5. DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro
The Action 5 Pro is aimed at people who prefer a newer generation and want to plan their setup with enough battery and accessory reserve.
- Standard Combo: suitable as an addition to compatible accessories you already have.
- Adventure Combo: our recommendation for a new purchase and longer outings.
6. DJI Osmo Action 6
The Action 6 is the pick for a setup built on the current DJI action cam generation. Here too, reliable runtime planning matters more than the model name alone.
- Standard Combo: makes sense if batteries and the mounts you need are already covered.
- Adventure Combo: our recommendation for a new, as complete as possible IRL setup.
7. What the camera doesn't solve on its own
- An action cam replaces neither an encoder nor a stable internet connection.
- For long streams, plan battery swaps, external power, and heat dissipation together.
- Mount, cables, and weather protection must not put bad strain on ports and cooling surfaces.
- Test the actual connection to the streaming app or encoder before you go outside.
Quick test before you go out
- Charge the batteries and practice swapping once.
- Connect the camera to the streaming app or encoder and check picture and audio.
- Do a longer trial run with the complete setup. Feel how warm the camera gets.
- Are the mount, cables, and weather protection secure?

8. Common questions about DJI action cams
Which DJI action cam is the best choice for IRL streaming?
For us right now, the DJI Osmo Action 4. It stabilizes the picture very well, and the RTMP workflow with Moblin runs stably on it. The Action 5 Pro and Action 6 are newer. But newer doesn't automatically mean better for IRL. Test the workflow before you head out for long.
Do I need the Adventure Combo, or is the standard version enough?
If you already have suitable batteries and mounts, the standard version is enough. If you're new to this, get the Adventure Combo. The extra batteries give you reserve on long streams and let you swap quickly on the go. What exactly is in the box is listed on each product page.
How does the action cam's picture get into Moblin?
Moblin controls the Action 4 over Bluetooth and starts the camera's RTMP livestream. The picture arrives in Moblin as a video source through the local RTMP server. You can also go live through DJI Mimo. For the basics, see Moblin and RTMP. For the Action 5 Pro and Action 6, you should test the process thoroughly.
Does an action cam replace the encoder?
No. The action cam only supplies the picture. You still need an encoder and a stable internet connection. How the signal gets onto the internet is covered on the page Encoders for IRL streaming.
How long does the battery last while streaming?
It depends on resolution, frame rate, stabilization, ambient temperature, and power supply, so there's no fixed number. Test your complete setup the way you'll really use it. And plan for battery swaps or external power. More on that under Power supply and Weather and temperature.
