The right drone for your streaming workflow
Drones can add extra angles to IRL streams. For RTMP to Moblin or the BELABOX, what matters is which controller and which smartphone connection your chosen combination offers.
1. Drone picks at a glance
Our current selection comes first. Context, controllers, and flight notes follow below.
2. DJI Neo 2 Fly More Combo
A compact 4K drone with three batteries, propeller guards, and simple controls. For 1080p/30 RTMP, use the controller with a phone holder; the controller with a built-in display is limited to 720p in the RTMP workflow. Thanks to its low weight, no drone license is normally required in the EU class C0, but you still need to check the specific marking and operating rules.
3. DJI Mini 5 Pro with DJI RC-N3
The Mini 5 Pro pairs a compact C0 body with a 1-inch CMOS sensor, 4K/60 fps HDR, and ActiveTrack 360°. For RTMP to Moblin or BELABOX, you have to pick the bundle with the DJI RC-N3 so the smartphone can serve as the streaming interface. A C0 model normally needs no drone license; before you fly, check the information on the type plate and the current operating category.
4. DJI Air 3S Fly More Combo with DJI RC-N3
The Air 3S offers a dual camera, a 1-inch CMOS sensor, three batteries, and more headroom for flight time and footage. For the smartphone-based RTMP workflow to Moblin or BELABOX, the variant with the DJI RC-N3 is the right choice; it makes a 1080p workflow possible. Because of the higher takeoff weight, the open category usually requires an EU proof of competency A1/A3 here; additional rules can apply depending on where and how you fly.
5. The RTMP path from drone to stream
The drone links by radio to the controller setup. The smartphone on the controller is the streaming interface. It sends the stream over RTMP to Moblin or the BELABOX. The settings in the apps depend on the drone, the controller, and the app version.
| Component | Role | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Drone | provides the aerial view | Weight and class decide which proof of competence you need |
| Controller | holds the radio link to the drone and the smartphone | For RTMP, take the variant with the DJI RC-N3 |
| Smartphone | connects the controller and the network | Test the cellular path and battery beforehand |
| Moblin or BELABOX | accepts the RTMP stream | Run the whole connection once before the flight |
The three combinations compared:
| Model | RTMP note from this page | Rules (rule of thumb) |
|---|---|---|
| DJI Neo 2 Fly More Combo | 1080p/30 works with the controller with a phone holder. The controller with a built-in display is limited to 720p in the RTMP workflow | C0: you normally don't need a drone license |
| DJI Mini 5 Pro with DJI RC-N3 | Take the bundle with the RC-N3, then the smartphone serves as the interface | C0: you normally don't need a drone license |
| DJI Air 3S Fly More Combo (RC-N3) | Variant with the RC-N3, a 1080p workflow is possible | open category: you usually need the EU proof of competency A1/A3 |
6. Important notes before you fly
- Before every outing, test the RTMP connection, range, and cellular path under realistic conditions.
- Plan for drone liability insurance with all three picks; operator registration and marking can be required too.
- Before every flight, check the local conditions and geographic zones, such as airports, control zones, protected areas, crowds, and local restrictions.
- Depending on weight, drone class, and type of operation, get the required drone license or EU proof of competency done in advance. For the Air 3S in the open category, at least A1/A3 typically applies; for the light C0 models, no proof is normally needed.
- Plan for spare batteries and safe takeoff and landing spots for longer sessions.
| Topic | What you check |
|---|---|
| Registration | Whether operator registration and marking are required |
| Insurance | Plan for drone liability insurance |
| Flight zone | Are there airports, control zones, protected areas, or crowds nearby? Are there local restrictions? |
| Proof of competence | Whether you need a drone license or EU proof of competency depends on weight, class, and type of operation |
| Tech | Test the RTMP connection, range, and cellular path under real conditions |
7. Video: drone streaming in practice
The video shows clearly how a drone can be used for special angles. It complements the notes on RTMP, the controller, and the mobile streaming workflow.
Written alternative to the video: You can read the drone picks and the notes before you fly without YouTube.
8. Common questions about drones in IRL streams
Can I stream over RTMP with any drone?
No, not every combination works. It depends on which controller and which smartphone connection the drone offers. The three recommendations here are built for the smartphone workflow with Moblin or BELABOX. Test the connection before your first real flight anyway.
Why the DJI RC-N3 controller?
With the Mini 5 Pro and Air 3S, the RC-N3 lets you use your smartphone as the streaming interface. On the Neo 2, the controller with a built-in display is limited to 720p in the RTMP workflow. For 1080p/30, use the controller with a phone holder.
Do I need a drone license?
That depends on weight, drone class, and type of operation. For light C0 models, no proof of competence is normally needed. For the Air 3S in the open category, the EU proof of competency A1/A3 usually applies. This is not legal advice. Read the current rules yourself before you fly.
Where does the drone send the stream?
Through the controller and phone over RTMP to Moblin or to the BELABOX. Basics on the protocol are on the RTMP page.
Can I fly anywhere I want to stream?
No. Airports, control zones, protected areas, crowds, and local restrictions can limit or ban a flight. Clear that up beforehand and also read the safety notes for IRL streams.
