Compact illustration of iOS 27 with smartphone, Wi-Fi, cellular, and a running IRL stream

Short take

Interesting for streamers, but only after a real long-run test

According to Apple, iOS 27 brings a smoother switch between Wi-Fi and cellular, plus improvements in performance and responsiveness. That sounds promising for mobile streams. But it doesn't automatically mean a running Moblin, RTMP, or SRTLA stream survives every network switch without a hitch. If you have a reliable setup, don't update right before an important stream. Plan for a backup, app updates, and a full real-world test.

1. What's new for IRL streamers?

With iOS 27, Apple mainly highlights system improvements. Apps are supposed to open up to 30 percent faster, the CPU scheduler was optimized, and transitions between Wi-Fi and cellular should work more smoothly. For an IRL stream, faster app launch is a side issue. What matters more is a stable system, even performance, and how it behaves when the internet connection changes.

The percentages quoted are manufacturer claims. They don't describe a higher streaming bitrate or longer battery life. Whether an iPhone on iOS 27 is actually more stable or more efficient during hours of camera capture, video encoding, and constant upload has to be checked with your own setup.

2. The network switch is the most interesting change

A mobile stream constantly moves between radio conditions of varying quality. The iPhone can leave a Wi-Fi network and switch to cellular, or later pick up a Wi-Fi network again. For iOS 27, Apple describes this handover as more seamless than before. That can shorten the time an app has no usable connection.

Important: A better switch at the operating system level doesn't guarantee an uninterrupted streaming session. RTMP, SRT, SRTLA, the target server, and the app in question all react differently to changed IP addresses, short dead zones, and packet loss.

If you use Moblink or several connections, you should also draw a line: iOS picks the connection of each individual iPhone. Merging several paths, plus reconnecting and buffering, is still handled by the streaming app and the server.

3. What does iOS 27 mean for Moblin and Moblink?

Moblin can use the iPhone as a camera, encoder, and central streaming app. A second iPhone can provide an extra connection through Moblink. After a major iOS update, it's therefore not just the camera and upload that have to work, but also audio, microphone receivers, gimbal, cooling, charger, and every Moblink device you use.

At the time of publishing this post, there is no multi-hour IRL4YOU long-run test with iOS 27 yet. A final statement on stability would be premature. A sensible first step is a controlled test with the current Moblin version and the same configuration you'll use in the stream later.

Check before you go out

4. How streamers can update safely

  1. Make a backup: Before an update, Apple recommends a backup through iCloud or a computer.
  2. Check your apps: Bring Moblin, accessory apps, and the control software you use up to date.
  3. Don't update right before the stream: Leave enough time for questions, app updates, and possible bugs.
  4. Test for at least 60 minutes: Use camera, resolution, bitrate, microphone, charging, and cooling at the same time.
  5. Force a network switch: Deliberately leave the Wi-Fi, check cellular, and then switch back to Wi-Fi.
  6. Watch OBS and the server: Check packet loss, dropouts, reconnecting, audio, and picture sync.

If you use several iPhones in your setup, don't update all the devices at once. A working spare device that hasn't been updated yet can save the stream if something goes wrong.

5. Which iPhones does iOS 27 support?

Apple lists the iPhone 11 and newer, as well as the iPhone SE from the second generation on, as compatible. That includes the iPhone 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, and the new 18 models, among others. Individual features can vary by device, language, and region.

For streaming, being able to install it is only the first step. Older devices can hit thermal limits sooner when camera capture, encoding, a bright display, cellular, and charging all run at once. That's why the real-world test matters more than the version number.

This post summarizes the manufacturer's claims in our own words and puts them in context for IRL streaming. The practical assessment will be added once there's a solid long-run test with Moblin and Moblink.

IRL4YOU's take

iOS 27 is interesting for mobile streamers mainly because of the improved network switching. Updating right away is still not a must. If you work stably with iOS 26 and Moblin, you gain more from a planned test than from an update right before your next outing. Once there's real-world experience across several streams, this post will be updated accordingly.
